A native of Sweden, Jonny Johansson grew up with a mix of Swedish folklore, Jazz and Latin music. This mix of musical styles has strongly shaped his musical development. Jonny plays a custom made, 9-string guitar tuned in perfect fourths and this extended register helps to enhance the illusion of sounding like more than one player. Starting out on classical guitar, Jonny uses a modified technique that enables him to play melody, chords and bass lines simultaneously in a way that sounds more like a piano than a guitar.
Some of the musicians with whom Jonny has played with include: Mark Murphy, Ron McClure, George Garzone, Jeff Hirshfield, Tim Hagans, Nancy Marano, Jack Wilkins, Carla White, and Debra Brown. He has performed in many of the world’s hottest clubs including Birdland, NYC, Cleopatra’s Needle, NYC, Cornelia Street Café, NYC, Acton Jazz Café, MA, Mo Jazz Café, Wilmington, VT, Reduta Jazz Club, Prague, Tjeck Republic, Fashing, Stockholm, Sweden just to name a few. In December 2001 Jonny earned his Doctoral of Musical Arts degree from New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, MA. Jonny also has three CDs available; Boston Tea Party, Swedish Woodwind and Being Healthy - all three released on the label BIBA Records.
This highly diverse artist is a fantastic choice if you are interested in having a guitarist provide live, ambient music in the styles of Latin, Jazz and Classical as a backdrop for your cocktail hour or intimate event.
